Inspired by South Iceland

South Iceland has been a big inspiration for scenes of many films and TV series. Last year the awesome landscape of south Iceland plays a key role in the Netflix TV series Katla which is directed by Iceland’s best-known director, Baltasar Kormákur. The plot sounds like a cross between sci-fi and fantasy. The town of Vík is the setting of the Katla TV series. It happens one year after the nearby (and massive) subglacial volcano Katla has erupted. The black beach of Reynisfjara is right next to the town of Vík.

As well as Trapped season three, many of the scenes were filmed in Caves of Hella, a historical landmark site in Iceland. The historical site is Iceland's oldest still standing archaeological remains. Some believe the caves to date even further back than the settlement of the Nordic Vikings. They offer guided tours in the caves, more information is to be found here.
