An exciting and thought-provoking conference is coming to Kirkjubæjarklaustur!

On 18-19 September, the conference "The Magic of Glaciers: An Interdisciplinary Approach" will bring together experts and enthusiasts to explore glaciers from a wide range of perspectives. The event is organized by the University of Iceland Research Centre in Höfn, the Southeast Iceland Nature Research Centre, Vatnajökull National Park, and Kirkjubæjarstofa.

Among the topics to be presented are research on glaciers, volcanic activity, and climate change, including how glaciers have evolved over time and the landscapes revealed as they retreat. The conference will also explore life in and around glaciers, from microscopic organisms to the pioneering vegetation that colonizes newly exposed land.

Glaciers will also be examined through the lenses of culture, history, literature, and the arts. Discussions will focus on the relationship between people and glaciers, how glaciers have been portrayed in folklore and literature, and how the arts can help us experience and understand the profound changes currently taking place in the natural environment.

In this way, the conference offers a multifaceted perspective on glaciers, viewing them as natural phenomena, living ecosystems, cultural symbols, and an important part of Iceland’s future. It provides an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of glaciers from a variety of viewpoints and through a wide range of questions and perspectives.
