Welcome to Hestar og Fjöll
Horseback adventures in the heart of South Iceland
About Hestar og Fjöll — Our Story, Our Land, Our Horses
Nestled in the wild and wondrous landscapes of South Iceland
lies Mid-Grund, our family farm where generations have lived, worked, and grown
together with the land. I’m Martina Holmgren, founder of Hestar og Fjöll, and
together with our three children, we are proud to be the sixth generation to
call this place home. We offer guided riding tours through Iceland’s most
stunning landscapes.
What was once a dream of mine—to live fully with horses, mountains, and open skies—has become our everyday life.
From our family to yours – welcome to an unforgettable riding experience.
What We Do & Offer
At Hestar og Fjöll, our aim is to share the magic and
majesty of Iceland through horseback adventures suited for a wide spectrum of riders—whether
it’s your first time in a saddle or you’re an experienced rider seeking
multi-day trekking.
- Day Tours: Perfect for those who want to explore Iceland’s iconic
scenery in one day. You’ll ride through river valleys, across fields and
beaches, under the shadow of Eyjafjallajökull, and along the black sand
shore. Our tours range from short 1‑hour rides to full‑day excursions, all
designed to offer beauty, comfort, and memories. - Multi‑Day Tours: For the true adventurers. Spend several days riding through
Iceland’s highlands, over uncontrollable terrain, into glacial valleys,
and among rhyolite mountains. Sleep in mountain huts, enjoy home‑cooked
meals, and ride from dawn to dusk if you like. These tours are designed to
immerse you in nature and give you the full experience of what Iceland has
to offer. - Other Activities: Beyond just trail rides, we offer a riding school
(group and private lessons), farm visits (meet the horses, learn about
their care, enjoy the stable atmosphere), and photo sessions (either at
the farm or at selected scenic sites).
What to Expect
Before you join us, here are a few things to know:
- We’ll ask you about your riding experience, height, weight, so we can assign the best horse for you.
- Weather in Iceland is unpredictable. Dress warmly, bring layers, waterproof gear. We supply rain jackets, gloves, helmets.
- Arrive about 15 minutes before your tour so there’s time to get settled, meet the horses, get fitted with gear.
Our Promise
When you ride with us, you’re more than just a guest. You become part of the story—our story of the farm, the horses, the land. We promise you:
- Immersive and unforgettable experiences in Icelandic nature
- Gentle, caring horses trained for safety and companionship
- Warm, personal guidance and service—by people who truly love what they do
- Memories that linger—whether it’s the feel of wind across your face, the sound of hooves in sand, the colors of sunrise over mountains
