Increased Hazard at Sólheimajökull Glacier

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a warning about hazardous conditions at the margin of Sólheimajökull glacier following significant changes observed in recent weeks. Access to the glacier has become more difficult due to unstable ice formations, newly formed glacial lagoons, and an increased risk of rockfall.

A small lagoon has formed east of the glacier tongue, while the ice ridge previously used to access the glacier has thinned considerably due to melting and calving. As a result, there is a risk of unstable ice giving way and of visitors falling into the cold, deep lagoons on either side of the ridge. 

Local tour operators have cancelled glacier trips as a precaution and are currently assessing alternative, safer routes. Mountain guides continue to closely monitor conditions, which have been changing rapidly from day to day. 

The Icelandic Meteorological Office also highlights the risk of rockfalls from the slopes above the access route to the southeastern side of the glacier. 

Visitors are strongly advised to avoid the area altogether. If visiting the glacier margin, exercise extreme caution, stay off unstable ice formations, and minimise time spent beneath steep slopes where rockfalls may occur without warning.

 

According to the IMO, these developments are part of the wider impact of glacier retreat caused by a warming climate. As Iceland's glacier margins continue to change, visitors are encouraged to stay informed, follow safety guidance and remain aware of the dynamic nature of glacial environments.
