Walking Tour: Högna Sigurðardóttir's Unbuilt Summer House
On the land of Hrauntunga, below Kambavegur, lies the preserved foundation of a house that has remained untouched since 1974. It is the foundation of a summer house that Karl and Unnur Schiöth intended to build, but the project never progressed beyond the construction of its base. The house was designed by the architect Högna Sigurðardóttir.
According to the surviving architectural drawings, the building would have been unlike most other houses in Hveragerði at the time and would have established a distinctive presence within the town's built environment.
On Sunday, 16 August, architect Guja Dögg Hauksdóttir will lead a walking tour to this remarkable site. The walk will depart from LÁ Art Museum at 1:00 pm.
Participation is free of charge, and everyone is warmly welcome.
Högna Sigurðardóttir (1929–2017) is regarded as one of the pioneers of Icelandic architecture and was also the first woman to practise as an architect in Iceland. She graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where her final project received special recognition in 1960. The project, which focused on a horticultural farm in Hveragerði, marked an important beginning to her career and clearly reflected the architectural ideas and principles that would later come to define her work.
