Hverafugl is a new summer music festival in Hveragerði, taking place from June 26 to 28, 2026. The festival presents contemporary music and provides a space where different music genres and styles meet. The festival works closely with local people and a large part of the programme is music connected to the region.
Concerts take place at various locations around the town, often in unconventional spaces that create a special intimacy and atmosphere. The festival will open at Blómaborg, where the choir Hverafuglar will perform. In the evening, a concert will be held at Grunnskólinn í Hveragerði, featuring the soloist Svanlaug Jóhannsdóttir and CAPUT conducted by Guðni Franzson. They will perform Stokkseyri by Hróðmar Ingi Sigurbjörnsson, a work composed to poems by Ísak Harðarson. The concert will also feature works by Hróðmar's students, including pieces by Bára Gísladóttir, Gísli Magnússon, Herdís Stefánsdóttir, and Snorri Hallgrímsson.
June 27 begins with a morning concert at Hveragerðiskirkja, where Pétur Nói Stefánsson, Jónas Sigurðsson, and Halldór Smárason will perform. Later in the day, there will be a poetry performance on the banks of the river Varmá, next to the Þetta líður hjá stone. There, flutist Björg Brjánsdóttir and singer Þórgunnur Anna Örnólfsdóttir will improvise based on poems by Elísabet Jökulsdóttir. A sound installation that is a collaborative project between Ingibjörg Ýr Skarphéðinsdóttir and Kristofer Rodriguez Svönuson will open at the Banana House of the Horticultural School, and Njörður Sigurðsson will lead festival guests on a history walk through Hveragerði. The day concludes at Hveragerðiskirkja with áttir, a work by Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir, performed by Heiða Árnadóttir.
The final day of the festival begins with a concert at Laugaskarð Swimming Pool, where Siggi String Quartet will perform works inspired by water, swimming culture, and hot springs. The programme features compositions by Ellis Ludwig-Leone, Halldór Smárason, and Una Sveinbjarnardóttir. KIMI Ensemble will perform new works by composition students from the Iceland University of the Arts, including pieces by Pranav Ranjit and Sunna Gunnlaugs. The concert will take place at the LÁ Art Museum. After a journey through various styles, the legendary chamber-pop ensemble Melchior will bring the festival to a close.
The artistic team of the festival consists of Halldór Smárason, Ingibjörg Ýr Skarphéðinsdóttir, and Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir.
The festival is supported by Tónlistarsjóður, Uppbyggingarsjóður Suðurlands, Hveragerðisbær, Hótel Örk, and Kjörís.
