How to get to South Iceland
Reaching South Iceland is straightforward from both Reykjavík and other parts of the country. The region is located just east of the capital area and is well connected by road, bus and domestic flights.
By car
From Reykjavík, it takes about 30 minutes to reach the western gateway of South Iceland, passing towns and attractions such as Hveragerði, Þingvellir National Park and Selfoss.
You can also enter South Iceland directly from Keflavík International Airport via road 43 (through Grindavík) and then road 427 along the south coast.
From East Iceland, you can drive west into South Iceland past well-known sights such as Höfn, Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
By air
It is possible to fly to Höfn in Hornafjörður with a domestic airline and then drive west through South Iceland towards Reykjavík, exploring the region along the way.
By bus
Several companies operate scheduled buses, day tours and bus passports in South Iceland, offering options both for independent travellers and guided experiences.
We recommend choosing a base in South Iceland and taking day trips from there. Distances between major sights are manageable, and this approach allows you to explore the region at a comfortable pace.
