Þakgil Camping Ground

Þakgil is located in a beautiful valley, surrounded by mountains, 20 km from Vík by road 214. These conditions make the weather in Þakgil very mild and calm, and a lovely little freshwater stream trickles though the camping site and in front of the houses.

The common dining room is in a cave that can be lit up by candles and heated by a fireplace in cold evenings. Hiking routes to interesting places of variable difficulty are all around, including to the glacier.

The campsite has brand new WC and shower facilities with an outdoor sink for dishwashing.

Höfðabrekkuheiði, Þakgil

A breathtaking 16 km drive from the ring road no. 1 to Þakgil campsite and hiking area. Surrounded by black sand and glacial rivers a gravel road crosses the heath of Höfðabrekka, a tuff ridge between rivers Múlakvísl and Kerlingadalsá formed during the last Ice Age, when volcanic material forced its way from beneath the glacier following a sub-glacial eruption. The road is closed during the winter. The vegetation in this area is extremely vulnerable to trampling, please keep to trails at all times.

Brydebud

Brydebúð is situated in the older section of Vík, on the west side of the village, below the so-called "banks". This small museum is at the roots of the mountain Reynisfjall, not far from the ocean.

The storefront was originally built in the Westman Islands in 1831 and was named Godthaabs-outlet. In the year 1895, the merchant J.P.T. Bryde bought this old storefront, had it taken apart and moved to Vik by ship.

Store business was ongoing in Brydebúð until 1980: Bryde-store from 1895 to 1914, Þorsteinn Þorsteinsson & Co. from 1914 to 1926 and Kaupfélag Skaftfellinga from 1926 to 1980.
