Skaftafell - Melting glaciers - VJP ranger programs

Price description

Free

Vatnajökull National Park offers daily educational walks with a ranger in Skaftafell from June 9th to August 18th. The theme of this walk is melting glaciers.

Within Vatnajökull National Park, many landscape forms bear witness to the downwasting of glaciers, which is one of the most obvious consequence of anthropogenic climate warming. At present, all the southern outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull are retreating and thinning at unprecedented rates.

A park ranger will greet visitors outside Skaftafell Visitor Center everyday at 13:30.  The ranger stops and speaks about the effects that the glaciers have on the landscape and how humans are effecting the glaciers. The walk is relatively easy and takes about one and a half  hour. There is no admission fee and of course everyone is welcome.
