Hjörleifshöfði trail run.

2.500 ISK for 15yrs and older, 1.500 for 14yrs and younger.

The annual trail run around Hjörleifshöfði will take place on Saturday 27th of April 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Hjörleifshöfði is a famous geosite within Katla Geopark and located about 15-20 minutes driving (15 km) East of Vík.

There are two trail options, 7 km and 11 km. Both trails begin and end at the same point. The first 7 km encircle Hjörleifshöfði on relatively flat, sandy ground. For those interested in a further challenge can continue another 3 km to the top of Hjörleifshöfði (221m), continuing back down to the starting (and ending) point, a total run of about 11 km.

The time will be measured for all and results displayed by the age groups, see the following list:
• 14 years and younger
• 15-18 years
• 19-39 years
• 40-49 years
• 50-59 years
• 60 years og older

Online pre-registration is available at the website until Friday 26th of April, 20:00 o´clock. You can also register with Katla Geopark by sending an e-mail to before 14:00 o´clock on Friday 26th of April.

Participation fee
Participation fee is 2500 kr for 16 years and older and 1500 kr for 15 years and younger.
After the run, the restaurant in Vík „Víkurskáli/Ströndin“ invites participants for soup and Mýrdalshreppur municipality offers free admission to the local swimming pool.

Everyone who participates and completes the run will receive an award.

The running route around Hjörleifshöfði is beautiful, with stunning views of the whole area the Katla Volcano and Mýrdalsjökull Glacier as well as the vast area of the black sandar plains and beaches. It is quite popular to run and hike in this area and locals say that supernatural forces influence those who go about, giving them energy as well as a deep sense of relaxation and connection to the nature.

The annual trail run around Hjörleifshöfði is a highlight of Katla Geopark´s annual GeoWeek, which will be held this year for the weekdays 27th of April to the 3rd of May. The programme is filled with local entertainment and can further information be found on the webpage, www.katlageopark, as well as tagged under #GeoWeek and #KatlaGeoWeek on social media.
