Sagnagarður Visitor Centre

Visit Sagnagarður the visitor centre of the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland. Sagnagardur, provides an easy to understand and evocatively presented exhibition of the battle to restore the soil and vegetation of Iceland. Visitors seeing the exhibition will gain a better appreciation of the land as they travel around Iceland. The effects of volcanic eruptions, huge floods and strong winds, along with public scepticism about trying to reduce the effects of the forces of nature, set the scene for the difficult but necessary task of stabilising the land and making it productive. The work of the pioneers in land reclamation is highlighted to give the story a really human dimension.

The Visitor Centre Sagnagardur is in South Iceland, 9 km from Route 1. Distances in km from Sagnagarður to: Reykjavík 110, Hella 11 and Hvolsvöllur 22. Look for road sign with Gunnarsholt / Sagnagarður 2 km east of Hella. Road 264.

Efra-Hvolshellar caves

The caves in Efra-Hvol (Upper Hvol) have histarically been referred to as "the Irish Caves" which are set into the so-called, "Irish Heath". It was originally thought that many of these man-made or artificial caves were madein the 19th century, but in fact, their histofical names appear to confirm they originated even beforr the settlement period.
