Hendur í höfn

Hendur í höfn is a beautiful bistro and a culture house in the small fisherman´s town Þorlákshöfn, just 30 min. drive from Reykjavík. We focus on being environmentally friendly and we make everything from scratch with the best possible ingredients, mostly directly from Icelandic farmers. Therefore we always serve clean and fresh ingredients that we cook with lots of love and respect for our customers. We emphasize on making every customer happy and always have a great selection of vegan and gluten free food, bread and of course delicious cakes.

Hendur í höfn is so much more than a bistro. It is the heart of Þorlákshöfn, where locals come together to have a good meal, read a book, work on their computers, knit together and of course to come and enjoy the events that are held regularly. But it is not only the locals that come to enjoy but also tourists and people living in Reykjavík and other towns around Þorlákshöfn. So it is the perfect place for tourists that want to have a little local experience. The charm in the events at Hendur í höfn is without a doubt the proximity with the artists. It comes close to the feeling of having them in your own living room. The recipe of the perfect evening is to come for a dinner on a concert night, enjoy the performance and then see the northern lights when you walk out of Hendur í höfn (in winter time of course!).

Herdísarvík

The former estate Herdísarvík, now abandoned, stood on the synonymous cove in Selvogur. The steep cliffs of Mt Herdísarvíkurfjall (329m) protrude behind it to the north and several lava tongues in its slopes bear witness to prehistoric eruptions in the area and some of them reached the sea. Along the coastline are still a few obvious ruins of ancient fishing outfits, which were declared inviolate in 1973.
According to the legend, a woman, Herdís, lived in Herdísarvík in the past and her sister, Krýsa, in Krýsuvík. They did not see eye to eye and were constantly at each other's throat. Both sisters practiced witchcraft and constantly played tricks on each other.
The renowned poet and entrepreneur Einar Benediktsson spent the last years of his life in his house in Herdísarvík. In 1935 he donated it to The University of Iceland and union professors sometimes spend their holidays there.
