Hiking with or without a guide us always a popular mode of travel and many hiking trails exist. It is possible to buy guided tours with various tour operators and individuals in the area but it is also possible to walk various routes on your own. A few hiking maps have been published in the area and here are information about some of them.

In Hveragerði are many hiking routes, here you can find a map.

In the municipality Ölfus (Þorlákshöfn and neighbourhood) are many hiking routes, you can find information here.

Katla Geopark offers three hiking maps, one for each region, Rangárþing eystra in the western part of the geopark, Mýrdalshreppur in the middle and Skaftárhreppur easternmost part. Each map has 15-16 hiking routes which vary in difficulty and distance. Among the long and difficult routes are the famous Fimmvörðuháls route, Tindfjöll mountains, Austurafréttur, Lómagnúpur cliff and Rauðhólsleið. There are also easy and family-friendly routes such as the Forrest walk in Kirkjubæjarklaustur and Tumaskógur, through the hillocks of Landbrotshólar and the Hjörleifshöfði cape. The maps come with a description of the hike, where to begin the hike, distance, level of difficulty, climb and duration. The Katla Geopark hiking maps are available at all information center within the Geopark. Enjoy!

In The Realm of Vatnajökull there is a hiking map available that shows walking trails from Jökulsárlón lagoon in Breiðamerkursandur and Fjallsárlón lagoon. This is a part of a walking route that is being developed in Austur-Skaftafellssýsla and is expected in the future to extend from Skaftafell in the west to Lónsöræfi in the east.
During your 15 km hike between the three glacial lakes you will learn about the flora and fauna of the area as well as getting a glimpse into the ways of life in this isolated area that has been dominated by glacier tongues and fierce glacial rivers.

Vatnajökull National Park publishes hiking maps and they are available at the visitor centres in the area,  Skaftárstofa at Kirkjubæjarklaustri, Skaftafell og Gamlabúð at Höfn.
